Long-Term Care Sessions

Long-Term Care Art Meditation Sessions

Independent, Assisted, & Nursing Homes/Dementia Units

What are Art Meditation Sessions for Long-Term Care facilities?

Vivid Art Meditation sessions are acrylic painting, participatory art sessions, tailored to resident needs and abilities. Systematic instruction is used to guide resident groups through the painting project, with the goal of the session being not the creation of the perfect art piece, but engagement in the creative process. Use of participatory art sessions are effective for the mental health and wellbeing of residents due to the following:

  • Participatory visual arts are effective in reducing stress and anxiety for older adults (Martin et al., 2018)
  • Art sessions, led by an art therapist or artist, improve brain processing and increase emotional cognitive-self regulation (Lusebrink and Alto, 2010; Pike, 2013)
  • Participation in art therapy improves quality-of-life levels for stroke patients (Kim and Kang, 2013)
  • A study found a 45-min, artist-led participatory art session lowers salivary cortisol levels, specifically for individuals with less artistic experience and skill (Kaimal et al. 2016)
